Preparatory talks in Vilnius: Congress theme and first speakers are now confirmed

At the beginning of August 2023, EOA President Manfred Laemmer met with Asta Sarkauskiene, President of the Lithuanian Olympic Academy (LOA) and EOA Board Member, for preparatory talks on the EOA Congress, set to take place in Vilnius from November 8th to 11th, 2023.

In the last few years, society has faced several challenges and crises such as social, political or climatic ones. These have set international politics in front of a hard to overcome challenge and they have yet to adapt. The same goes for the world of sports, as these crises impact the world itself and the organisation of sporting events, just like the Olympics. How is the Olympic Movement adapting and reacting to these changes as well as challenges? Discussing this question with academic experts and representatives from organized sports is the core of this year’s Congress theme “The Olympic Movement in a Changing World.”

The congress will delve into critical topics such as the war in Ukraine but will also make room to deal with legal debates or a closer look at the financing of National Olympic Academies and educational activities. The issue of safeguarding in sports will also undergo an in-depth analysis.

EOA and LOA are working together to craft an agenda that promises to be informative and engaging. A standout feature this year will be the introduction of a new format for NOA-led workshops, offering delegates fresh perspectives and hands-on learning opportunities.

Confirmed speakers include Maria Bogner of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Sylvia Schenk from the IOC Human Rights Advisory Committee, Christoph Vedder of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and Ales Solar from the NOC of Slovenia, guaranteeing fruitful debates, enriching conversations and encouraging exchange between delegates, experts and the speakers.

“I’m optimistic that this year’s congress will be the origin of effective discussions and implementations in the world of the Olympic Movement and sports,” said EOA President Manfred Laemmer.

EOA members and partners have been invited via e-mail and are encouraged to register for the Congress before the end of August.
