Laura Dahlmeier

Olympic Person of the Month July 2025

Laura Dahlmeier was more than one of the most accomplished biathletes of her generation. She was a true ambassador of Olympic values, a passionate advocate for environmental awareness, and an inspiration to athletes and outdoor enthusiasts across Europe and beyond.

Born on 22 August 1993 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Dahlmeier began skiing at the age of two and quickly discovered her love for biathlon. She rose through the junior ranks and made her World Cup debut in 2013. Known for her resilience, tactical intelligence, and remarkable shooting accuracy, she achieved exceptional success on the international stage.

Her greatest moment came at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, where she won gold medals in the sprint and pursuit, as well as a bronze medal in the individual, becoming the first woman to win both sprint and pursuit at a single Olympics. She also claimed seven World Championship titles between 2015 and 2017 and secured the overall World Cup title in the 2016/17 season.

In 2019, at the age of just 25, Dahlmeier made the courageous decision to retire from professional sport, stating she had achieved all she dreamed of in biathlon. Her post-athletic career reflected her deep love for nature and education. She authored a children’s book on climate change, worked as a TV expert, and engaged in mountain guiding and environmental projects in the Bavarian Alps.

Tragically, Laura Dahlmeier passed away in July 2025 during a mountaineering expedition in Pakistan. A sudden rockfall at high altitude claimed her life on an ascent of Laila Peak. Her final wish not to endanger others during rescue efforts was honoured: A testament to her selfless spirit.

With this tribute, the EOA honours Laura Dahlmeier as Olympic Person of the Month July 2025. Her life exemplified the values of courage, humility, and integrity – in sport and beyond. Her achievements will continue to inspire, and her legacy as an athlete, mountaineer, and role model will live on.
