EOA Flame Award winners 2024 received trophies

At the EOA Congress in Olympia on September 27, 2024, we proudly celebrated the winners of the EOA Flame Awards during a special ceremony. This year’s awards recognised outstanding projects that have significantly contributed to preserving Olympic Heritage and advancing Olympic Education. The trophies were presented to the delegates of the National Olympic Academy of France, the German Olympic Academy and the Hellenic Olympic Academy at the Hotel Europa during the closing gala dinner of our Congress in Olympia. The ceremony also marked a historic first in the education category, with two projects being honoured.

EOA Flame Award Olympic Heritage

The winner of the Olympic Heritage category was “The Great Collection of Sports Archives” (Grande Collecte des Archives du Sport), an initiative launched by the National Olympic Academy of France. This pioneering project invites the public to contribute sports-related materials to national archives, ensuring that crucial aspects of France’s sporting history, including women’s sports and parasports, are preserved for future generations.

Supported by the French Ministry of Culture and recognised as part of the Cultural Olympiad by the Paris 2024 Organising Committee, the project mobilises a broad network of over 180 national, departmental, and municipal archive services. It reaches out to diverse contributors such as clubs, athletes, coaches, and sports enthusiasts to collect materials ranging from historical documents to digital archives. By empowering citizens to be custodians of their own sporting history, the initiative strengthens the cultural fabric of French sport and creates a lasting legacy.

EOA Flame Award Olympic Education

For the first time, two projects were honoured in the Olympic Education category, both setting a strong example of how to integrate and promote Olympic values within national education systems.

“Olympia is calling: Join in!” (Olympia ruft: Mach mit!), led by the German Olympic Academy, promotes Olympic education through interdisciplinary teaching materials designed for primary and secondary schools. The Paris 2024 edition focuses on Olympic values, French culture, sustainability, and new Olympic sports like breaking or surfing. Using a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) strategy, students engage with interactive digital content, including athlete video tutorials, making learning both innovative and accessible. With over 50,000 downloads in its first year, the project has had a significant impact on integrating Olympic Values such as Respect into the school curriculum.

“The Olympic Week to the Road of Paris 2024”, organized by the Hellenic Olympic Academy, engaged over 234,000 students from 5,376 schools across Greece, Cyprus, and Greek schools abroad. This year’s edition focused on the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, offering students the opportunity to virtually explore Olympic landmarks, interact with Olympic and Paralympic athletes, and participate in creative activities that fostered a deeper understanding of Olympic Values. Selected schools also took part in a 3-day educational trip to Ancient Olympia, further enriching their experience with workshops and sports activities.

The EOA Flame Award continues to celebrate member organisations advancing the Olympic ideals across Europe and beyond. The EOA Executive Board, which acts as the jury, assessed all submitted projects on the basis of several criteria, among them impact, innovation, and legacy. The projects mentioned above achieved the highest rating in their category and consequently won the competition.

We congratulate the 2024 winners for their inspiring contributions, all of which demonstrated the high quality and great work of the EOA members. We look forward to their continued positive impact on future generations.
