The European Fair Play Movement (EFPM) marked its 30th anniversary in Mardin, Türkiye, from October 21-24, 2024, with the theme “Fair Play Education to Overcome Violence, Bullying, and Cheating in Sport.” Ivans Klementjevs, Vice-President of the European Olympic Academies (EOA) and an Olympic medalist in sprint canoeing, attended this landmark congress. His visit underlined the importance of educational measures to combat unethical behaviours in sports.
Klementjevs delivered a presentation on October 23 during the Congress’s afternoon session and contributed to a round table discussion, elaborating on the vision and mission of the European Olympic Academies. His focus on the role of sports diplomacy in fostering peace and ethical behaviour resonated strongly with the Congress theme. Drawing from both his experiences as a top-level athlete and his extensive work in sports governance, Klementjevs emphasised the EOA’s dedication to fostering a culture of fairness and respect across Europe through educational initiatives.
Throughout the event, participants, including representatives from National Olympic Committees, ministries, and academic institutions, engaged in meaningful exchanges aimed at strengthening ethical standards in sports. The Congress provided not only an intellectual platform but also an opportunity to explore the historic city of Mardin, offering delegates a glimpse into the region’s rich cultural heritage. Klementjevs, alongside fellow attendees, participated in a memorable farewell dinner hosted at the “House of Mehmet Samsa”, closing the Congress with a spirit of shared purpose.
